Serge is a twill fabric that has a
characteristic diagonal ridge on both sides of the fabric. The
worsted variety of serge is used for making coats and military
uniforms; while silk serge is used for making linings for clothing
and possibly curtains.
Denim is believed to have got its name
from a cotton fabric with a similar weave know as 'serge de Nimes'
after the town Nimes in France.
