Paisley is the name given to the
twisted tear-drop pattern printed onto a variety of fabrics. The
origin of the design comes from Persia or India, however, in the UK
it's the distinctive pattern that was produced in the town of
Paisley, Scotland.
Toile is the French name for the linen
cloth or painting canvas which was introduced into the UK in the 12th
century. Toile is also the name given to a test garment which was
typically made from the same cloth, in the US they're often called
muslins.
Toile
de Jouy is the gorgeous cloth associated with French
landscapes which depict tranquil scenes of yesteryear. This fabric
usually has a creamy background with the Toile de Jouy repeat pattern
in blue or red, although green and browns are also available. It's
used for soft furnishings such as drapes and curtains and and is
ideal for upholstery projects.
