French Inspired Shabby Chic

French inspired Shabby Chic include the flamboyance of Rocco styled furniture along with inspirations from the Greek and Romans. The heavily ornate furniture may be flamboyant but there was also lines of symmetry so that pieces looked in balance.
Greek and Roman architectural inspirations were used such as in the tapered legs with fluted details of the chairs reminiscent of classical columns. Other classical references included lyres, wreaths and cornucopias, among others.

Painted furniture was also used extensively along with gilding to show opulence and elegance. Yes, gilding was still present later on in the period but in lesser quantities and with lesser grandiosity, as the era moved forward designers revealed more of the wood’s beauty via its natural grain, with mahogany being the preferred wood.

To get the look you shouldn't forget the rugs and curtains either. Area rugs in pastels can instantly enliven a room while curtains add character to it. Lace is a favourite curtain material for shabby chic rooms but you can also experiment with other materials.

Tips:
• Use ornamental mirrors to accentuate the bed and to make the room appear larger.
• Place small sculptures around the room.
• Hang drapes or tapestry to complement the bed and the other furnishings.
Your main goal: Sleep like French royalty did.
