Fabrics play an integral part of
interior design – just think how many times they're used in a room
and you'll soon discover that no home is complete without them. From
curtains and blinds to bedding and soft furnishings fabrics are what
turns a house into a home. The patterns designs and colour you choose
to use will say a lot about the type of person you are (even if
you're not aware of it).
When choosing colours we obviously
choose colours which we are comfortable living with, the same applies
to pattern or lack of it. However, the type of fabric you choose will
dependant on what you are going to use it for. For example, if you're
going to re-upholster a chair you'll need a fabric which is
substantial enough to be pulled and stretched tight, on the other
hand if you want to make a stunning window dressing you may prefer to
use a more lightweight fabric which is fluid and allows you to drape
it over curtain poles.
Each type of fabric also has its own
distinctive texture, from rough hard wearing denim to silky smooth
satins and gorgeous plush velvet. You may also need to consider the
fabric's ability to be maintained – many are machine washable which
is a must for bedding etc. while others will need to be
professionally dry cleaned to prevent shrinkage and distortion.
Whenever you need to choose a fabric,
either to make your own soft furnishings or if you're buying ready
made items it's worth checking to see if they are fit for your
intended purpose – there's plenty of beautiful fabrics available so
you'll have no trouble finding exactly what you need in a colour and
pattern to you and the style of your home.
